Something Splendid Is Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month
As we look at the remainder of the year and for opportunities to give back, we take pride in the support we will be providing to those affected by breast cancer during the month of October. Like many, the team at Something Splendid has their own experience with breast cancer.
As a sophomore in college, Erynn discovered her mom tested positive for a genetic mutation (PALB2 gene), meaning she had an 85% chance of developing breast cancer. That same year, she faced the news that her mother was fighting breast cancer for the second time. The fight against cancer was personal again, 6 women in her family have all had breast cancer, some even more than once.
But instead of letting fate do its worst, Erynn took control into her own hands, facing her monster head-on, opting for a preventative double mastectomy. She made the most selfless decision one can — to take care of her physical, mental, and emotional well being! Knowledge is power and it’s such a relief to know her chances of ever battling breast cancer are now extremely low. We are thrilled to report Erynn has recuperated from her surgery and is thriving!
A portion of all Something Splendid sales will be donated to 100 Voices of Hope at the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center -- a source of research funding and community inspiration for the team of Indiana University researchers at the Vera Bradley Foundation Center for Breast Cancer Research.
Home to the cure of testicular cancer that has saved hundreds of thousands of lives and the world’s only healthy breast tissue bank that has served as a resource to investigators around the world to learn more about the disease, the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (in Indianapolis) is the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The center’s physician scientists have made protocol-defining discoveries that have changed the way doctors treat:
- breast cancer
- gastrointestinal cancer, including pancreatic and colon cancers
- genitourinary cancer, such as testis, bladder and prostate cancers
- hematologic disorders, including multiple myeloma and leukemia
- thoracic cancer
- thymoma and thymic carcinoma
- tumors associated with neurofibromatosis type 1, primarily in children
- umbilical stem cell transplantation
